What price do we pay for ignoring our lower back when exercising?

The muscles of the lower back which are often neglected during one's pursuit of the insta-worthy muscles: abs, biceps and pecs that make you look attractive but leave you short on stability. Building a great body means building balance, and the muscles of the lower body are essential for stability and spinal health. What's the point of looking great or having a lot of muscle if the most crucial structures of your body can't bear the load that this extra muscle brings on?

Your core muscles and your lower back

All these muscles work together to help you maintain proper posture, which is the first pitfall of not training them- it makes posture all the more difficult. From here, the problems compound, especially when you are asking your lower back to bear more strain as you scale up your ab routine.

Neglecting your lower back no longer

There are many exercises and stretches which can be easily learned and quickly added into your routine to ensure that you are rounding out your exercise and contributing to spinal health. After all, these are the muscles that matter most for the longevity of your body. Chronic pain, postural problems and degradation of the spine can all be prevented by paying attention to the conditioning of the lower back muscles. To resolve pain in the lower back, establish good posture and restore spinal balance, give our office in Park Slope a call to schedule an appointment today.

But if it does, seek out your Park Slope chiropractor

When you are desperate, you seek out the most drastic forms of relief. This leads many people into the surgeon's office for a chat regarding spinal surgery options; it leads others to the pharmacists with a prescription for narcotic painkillers. At Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we believe that surgery and drugs should be a last resort, and we have many modalities available to curtail your spinal pain and get you on the road to rehabilitation naturally. The Cox Technicque of flexion distraction, more commonly known as the Cox Method, is one of the modalities that has shown great success in patients looking to reduce their symptoms of back pain.

Conservative methods for addressing back pain

Flexion/Distraction manipulation is a technique developed by Dr. James Cox that uses a specialized table to put you in different planes of motion, including passive distraction, lateral bending, flexion and rotation. These motions reduce intradiscal pressure and widen the spinal canal area to provide a reduction in symptoms of pain that are characteristic to hernaited discs. We can also achieve improvements in range of motion of the spinal joints. This is a widely used and well-researched form of spinal manipulation; a gentle, non-invasive procedure that helps many people find relief from pain in as little as 30 days from the initial treatment. Many people find the treatment relaxing.

We motivate you to move more

In most cases, too much immobility both contributes to the back pain in the first place and fuels the pain during injury. Here are some of the problems that accrue when you spend most of your time sitting:

Energy stagnation, poor circulation

Reduced dynamic joint mobility, in which joints cannot fully realize their desired range of motion.

Intervertebral discs absorb fluid and tighten up: the back becomes tighter and more vulnerable to injury.

Furthermore, sitting for long periods of time is usually performed with poor posture, compounding the stagnation by putting pressure on the cervical and lumbar vertebrae. Degenerated and herniated discs (separate conditions) are likely outcomes of a highly immobile lifestyle.

We provide the solutions that will help you move more

So what is the secret? Get moving. Discard the little windows of time you spend zoned out scrolling through internet meme and stretch. Stand up and extend your arms fully forward, with hands clasped, and push your fingers against the back of your hands. Feel your body come alive as your structures and muscles are called to duty.

At your Park Slope Chiropractor, we help people find their inner healthful being. Making you aware is only the first step: instilling the virtue of posture and a thirst for mobility is a key goal for us. We can help you create a plan for core strengthening, resistance and mobility training that will restore your back to a state of health.

In the grips of a New York winter

Cold air makes life difficult. To start with, it makes breathing harder and affects articulation. Traditional Chinese Medicine tells us that "cold wind" is responsible for a number of maladies, both seasonal and long-term. What this tells us is that simple things like wrapping up warm and drinking hot, nourishing liquids like tea actually make a huge difference during winter time. And if winter wellness starts with small, simple factors like this, then chiropractic and acupuncture should also be considered.

Feeling your winter best

Your immune and nervous systems fight hard in cold weather; they are often worn down more quickly in winter than in other seasons, hence the seasonal cold, and the outbreaks of flu during cold months. Operating on the idea that the odds are slightly stacked against your nervous and immune systems during winter, holistic medicine attempts to tip the scale back in their favor. Using chiropractic adjustments to establish spinal alignment and balance, your nervous system is less encumbered. Acupuncture balances the body further by stimulating circulation, nourishing all parts of your body with nutrient and oxygen-rich blood and cycling away waste products.

Winter is a grind

Our services ensure that the cold, dark New York winter doesn’t get the best of you. Many of our patients find that with regular attention to their physical and mental balance, they are able to avoid seasonal illness completely. If you are interested in finding out more about our holistical wellness plan for winter, give our office a call to schedule an appointment today.

As your body attempts to recover and transition from pregnancy to motherhood, breastfeeding poses yet another problem for your ailing spine.

The awkward angles and the extra weight combine to add more pressure on to an already imbalanced system. We recommend you take a proactive approach to preventing back pain from breastfeeding, thereby mitigating the additional mental stress and fatigue that results from physical pain. Here are our tips for keeping the pain away.

The post Banishing Back Pain from Breastfeeding appeared first on Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture of Park Slope.

A healthy transition for mother and child

Keep these tips in mind:

When sitting, recline to an angle of 20 degrees to take pressure off your neck.

Use cervical and lumbar support pillows when sitting

Choose a supportive chair when sitting

Vary your position between sitting and standing to prevent muscle fatigue

When standing, always use a baby carrier or a wrap

If lying down, make sure to use a pillow to prop yourself up and support your upper body effectively

From here, it is a matter of exercising to restore lost muscle tone and improve the weight-bearing and compression-resistance capabilities of your core muscles. If you can do this while also focusing heavily on hydration, nutrition and sleep, you will go a long way towards making a healthy transition for yourself and, by extension, your child. At Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we can facilitate this process! We have the expertise and experience to help you fight pain and keep well being on the up and up. Give our office a call to schedule an appointment today.

As with all of life, balance is important

We are big fans of balance: work-leisure balance, mental health balance, exercise-relaxation balance and, of course, balance in the diet. Today, we want to focus on balance between two important minerals: magnesium and calcium. Calcium is well touted for its impact on bone and tooth health, and this impact becomes greater as we age. As we grow older, we face the loss of bone mineral density, which leaves us more vulnerable to injury from bone breakage. Weaker bones can be offset with diet- calcium and vitamin D are the two main minerals that help us maintain strong bones. But several studies have shown a correlation between arthritis, osteoporosis and magnesium deficiency. What's behind this link?

The post Calcium-Magnesium Balance for Better Spinal Health appeared first on Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture of Park Slope.

Magnesium is key to calcium absorption

So many people focus exclusively on intaking the recommended amount of calcium and vitamin D, forgetting about magnesium. Magnesium and calcium share a complementary relationship, the former helping the body absorb the latter. Without a balance of magnesium, calcium accumulates in the body and this in of itself can be detrimental. Magnesium has a lot of health benefits beyond simply helping your body absorb calcium but, from a spinal wellness perspective, this can be one of its most important roles. Fortunately, magnesium is even more widely available from natural foods than calcium and certainly moreso than vitamin D.

Simple diet tricks for improving spinal health

The magnesium-calcium balance is a great example of how simple dietary changes can have profound effects on your spinal health. If you are interested in finding out more, give our office in Park Slope a call to schedule an appointment today.

Is brain fitness really such an abstract concept?

It is your main muscle, after all. At a certain point, cognitive performance reaches its zenith and then begins to decline with each passing year. What's more, cognitive performance is closely linked with physical performance and key functions such as balance. One of the key risk factors in our senior populations is falling- the injuries that can be sustained are devastating. By improving cognitive performance, you can actually make yourself more physically able and less vulnerable to injury.

Improving brain function helps you live a more functional life

At Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture of Park Slope, we support holistic methods for training the brain. Brain fitness refers to neuroplasticity- the idea that you can create new neural connections and improve your brain performance through simply using your brain; clinical evidence is telling us that it is that simple!

And this concept applies to people of all ages, and especially those who are looking to recover from traumatic brain injuries or strokes. Using sensory training exercises and balance improvement techniques, you create natural challenges for your brain that elicit a response and an improvement in overall functioning. This translates to a real improvement in overall wellness.

Maintaining your brain is a constant struggle

Unfortunately, we are far better at abusing our brains than treating them nicely. We pile on the stress at work, then "decompress," with sensory stimulation in the evenings; we forego hydration and good nutrition against our better judgment; we let our sleep suffer; all of these factors create serious wear and tear for our brains. The problem is not that we wear them down, but that we do little to replace what we take out. Let us give you some incentive for why you will want to start taking better care of your brain.

A healthy brain improves every aspect of our health

It all starts with the brain- an uptick in cognitive function will improve your mood, physical performance, immune system function and even regulate your relationship with chronic pain. Optimal brain function is consistently linked by clinical studies with lowering the risk for many diseases, and significantly improving quality of life. Chiropractic is one way to regulate and improve cognitive function. At Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture of Park Slope, we are a certified and experienced practice of neurologically-based chiropractic.

We use the latest technology to diagnostically assess brain function and set a course for improving it; spinal adjustments have been shown to regulate and improve the nervous system functioning. Our patients report feeling:

more energized

a greater ability to focus

more mental clarity

better retention and recall

How soon after birth can I receive a chiropractic adjustment?

We get this question a lot and our answer is always the same: as soon as you feel ready; as soon as you feel ready to leave the house, you could receive a chiropractic adjustment. The post-partum period is broken up into three phases, and will last as long as 9 months after birth; the majority of women will report at least one health problem during this period of time. What this tells us is that recovering from pregnancy and delivery is not something that happens over a night, or a week. It will take a concerted effort on your behalf to adjust to a body that is forever-changed, and a life that is irreversibly altered. For many new mothers, this can be an overwhelming time, fraught with nerves and misapprehension. It is our job to help balance your body and mind to help you effectively transition back into a new normal life with your baby.

Postpartum chiropractic focuses on balancing the body.

The penultimate phase of pregnancy tends to destabilize the spine at its base by loosening ligaments in the pelvis in preparation for deliver. This relaxation of ligaments at the base of the spine means that many women emerge after delivery with lower back pain. With instability at the base of the spine, the rest of your back is vulnerable to misalignment and the associated nerve pain, which can quickly lead to headaches, stiffness and soreness. In the early postpartum phase (the first 2-6 weeks), we focus gentle adjustments at restoring pelvic stability and alignment in the lower back. By adding in core stability, we start the rebuilding process of a region that was so severly weakend during pregnancy.

Postpartum chiropractic in Brooklyn

Don’t go it alone! This is the best advice we can give to any new mother. Trying to manage the physical and mental stress of adjusting to a new life with your child can leave you exhausted and vulnerable to postpartum depression. With qualified health professionals on your side, you will give yourself the best chance of recovering fully and avoiding many of the pitfalls of the postpartum period. We look forward to hearing from you.

Why is sciatica so prevalent in pregnancy?

There is this idea that pregnancy causes sciatica; there are even strange theories out there which purport that the baby somehow presses directly on the sciatic nerve. And while we can assure you that this is not the case, we do agree that there is a strong correlation between pregnancy and sciatica, particularly in the third trimester. The fact is, pregnancy breeds a perfect set of conditions for nerve impingement:

Shifting center of gravity

Added weight of the child

Less activity

Loose ligaments in the pelvis which breeds instability in the lower back

Poor posture.

In this scenario, there is a good chance that your muscles are becoming strained and pulling your body out of alignment; this is when nerve impingement happens. When this impingement happens to occur to the sciatic nerve, sciatica symptoms develop, including:

Burning, shooting pain in the lower back, usually isolated on one side

Pain in the buttocks and lower extremities

Numbness and tingling in the back and lower extremities

How does chiropractic remedy this situation?

Spinal adjustments help to mitigate the unstable situation which is brewing constantly during pregnancy. By returning the vertebrae in your lower spine to proper alignment, we can undo the problematic nerve impingement. From the vantage point of alignment, we introduce gentle stretching and exercises which strengthen the supportive muscles and restore mobility to the lower back. If your sciatica persists, we can help you change your lifestyle to account for the pain, including implementing heat and ice, improving posture, and changing the way you sleep. Massage further aids in the healing process by increasing circulation and stimulating the healing process. We can advise you on stretches, including yoga poses and other gentle exercises, that will prevent your body from falling back into the old patterns of misalignment and impingement.
