Homeopathy
Helping the body heal itself

homopathyHomeopathy is a safe, effective and natural approach to help restore health. In accordance with natural laws of healing, homeopathy seeks to cure by re-establishing the body's internal homeostasis or balance. This correction can strengthen the immune system, enhance emotional balance and restore health. Homeopathic remedies are prescribed according to the 'Law of Similars', an age-old principle that recognizes the body's ability to heal itself. The medicines or 'remedies' are derived from animal, vegetable, and mineral. They are prepared in such a way that they are non-toxic; taken in such small doses there are no known side effects.

Dr. Thomas has studied homeopathy extensively and uses the remedies as a compliment to other treatments. For example, a remedy may be recommended in addition to chiropractic care to assist with arthritis, a sprained ankle or headache. In addition to an acupuncture treatment, homeopathy may be used to reduce symptoms related to menopause, asthma or constipation.

Dr. Thomas incorporates homeopathic remedies as an adjunctive treatment for her patients. Individuals seeking homeopathic services for serious disabilities or life-threatening illnesses are referred elsewhere for such care.

(Please note: We offer nutritional counseling in support of Chiropractic & Acupuncture Treatments only. But there is not a nutritionist on staff.)

Diet and Nutrition
They're right. You ARE – and WILL BE – what you eat.
nutritionWhat aspect of our health do we influence daily? Nutrition.

Foods. Fluids. Supplements. Dietary aids. Medicines. All contribute to the bio-chemical makeup of our bodies.

Many people do not maintain healthy diets and may suffer from digestive disorders and other conditions aggravated by poor eating habits. Studies show that 80% of American adults are chronically dehydrated. The balance of macro-nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats), as well as micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals, and enzymes), is essential for the cells and organs of the body to function properly. Poor supplies of macro- and micro-nutrients to the cells and tissues make it difficult for the body to work properly. Sluggish cell activity may result in overall body fatigue, susceptibility to infection, chronic inflammatory disorders - including digestive problems, arthritis, and allergies.

In the emerging field of nutrigenomics studies show that all 'sizes' of nutrients do not fit all people. In other words, every individual has an optimal caloric standard, as well as a nutritional combination that best suits them. The science of nutrigenomics advocates that we adopt an ODA (Optimal Daily Allowance) to reflect this finding, and abandon the model of RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) that is based on a generalized global 'minimum' of nutrients necessary to avoid disease.

The current so-called "Modern American Diet" is high in meat sources, processed foods, sweets, colas, alcohol, coffee, tobacco, and pharmacologic medications. This diet contributes to a high-acid (low pH) condition in the body that injures cells and impairs the ability of the body's organs - including the brain - to function optimally.

The American diet and its resulting high levels of systemic acids is made worse with the sedentary lifestyle many people have adopted. Inactivity does further damage to the internal workings of the body. Lack of fresh air, shallow breathing, and reduced oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange add to the body's acidic state.

Systemic acidosis is associated with chronic inflammatory disorders (arthritis, lumbago, headache), auto-immune diseases (RA, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia), cardio-vascular disorders (leading to increased risk of heart attack and stroke) and even certain types of cancer.

The good news is that we are ever changing organisms and many high-risk conditions can be reversed with improvements in diet and nutrition.

At Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture, with re-education, instruction, and routine monitoring we help patients recover their health. We recommend dietary changes, vitamin and mineral supplements and new eating habits.

Increasing intake of healthy proteins like chicken, fish, or non-meat sources such as beans and nuts; fresh leafy green vegetables; complex carbohydrates, and thirst-quenching health drinks invigorate the cells, the organs, and the entire body.

With a helping hand, food choices and eating habits improve. Results become evident with more energy, less pain, clearer mental function and lost inches.

A healthy diet that includes appropriate, individually prescribed nutritional supplements, is essential to rebuilding lasting health and well-being. No one is 'put on a diet'. We educate and encourage informed healthy choices. As you learn about and make improved food choices, you will begin to look better and feel healthier.

Physiotherapy and Massage
Thanking your muscles for their hard work
PandM1Our body's muscles never sleep. The heart is a muscle that beats every second of our lives, and begins pumping blood through our bodies before we are born. The intercostal muscles between our ribs work with the diaphragm muscle to keep us breathing while we sleep. We cannot focus or blink our eyes, say a word, take a step, or even sit up without using our muscles.

To maintain healthy muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints, it is very important to provide the essential macro- and micro-nutrients (healthy foods, vitamins, and minerals) as well as maintain adequate hydration (plenty of water). It is also vital to exercise regularly. Finally, we can care for our musculo-skeletal system with massage and physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy
At Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture located in Park Slope, Brooklyn 11217, we use a variety of the state-of-the art devices to maximize soft tissue health and restoration. Ultra-sound, low frequency electric stimulation, interferential electro-therapy as well as traction, massage rollers, and hot packs are available for patient care.

Physiotherapy is useful for recovery from disc injury, sprain/strains, fractured bones, and pulled muscles. Injuries related to motor vehicle accidents, work or personal injuries of the neck, back, arms or legs are also successfully treated with physiotherapy.

Massage
PandM2Therapeutic massage is also available at Community Chiropractic & Acupuncture. Deep Swedish massage, aroma therapy, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, and trigger point therapy are available. The benefits of regular massage are more easily experienced than described – and far more enjoyable.

Research studies, including some conducted by the National Institutes of Health, suggest that massage benefits the immune system, is helpful in decreasing blood pressure, alleviates pain in migraine sufferers, and improves alertness and performance. Therapeutic massage can stimulate weak, inactive muscles and compensate for inactivity resulting from illness or injury. It also can hasten and lead to a more complete recovery from exercise or injury.

Professional services with experienced massage therapists are held in private 1-hour and 1 & ½ hour sessions sessions in our Park Slope, Brooklyn facilities located in Park Slope, Brooklyn 11215.

Articles of Interest

OH1Achieving optimal health is like the Phoenix that rises from the ashes. You can regain your health and well-being to live the life you aspire to.

Sometimes we forget how great we used to feel. Stress, acute pain, and chronic illness can deteriorate one's quality of life. Getting back on the road to health can seem overwhelming, if not impossible.

When your body hasn't been balanced for one reason or another – either through lack of exercise or bad diet or illness or the daily stresses of life – a cascade of physiological events occur that result in poor health. This often surfaces as GI complaints, frequent illness, lethargy, depression, or pain.

We have good news. By addressing the body as a whole, and employing several highly effective techniques, we can help reverse months and even years of poor lifestyle habits and illness. Together we can help restore your body, mind and spirit to optimal health with our integrated approach to both cellular and systemic levels of care.

Cellular care looks to improve the state of the cells of the body as well as the fluids that keep them nourished and healthy. We begin our focus with a healthy diet adjusted correctly for age, body type, activity level and season of the year. Next we recommend vitamin and mineral supplements adjusted specifically to the individual's current health status. Balanced electrolytes help re-establish a more pristine tissue environment in which cells may better do their work. Vitamins and minerals provide the micro-nutrients that aid in healthy cell metabolism. Exercise increases oxygen to the cells and adequate water intake hydrates the cells and surrounding tissues. Immunity and nerve activity is further enhanced with chiropractic and acupuncture treatment.

OH2Systemic care addresses the global effects of chiropractic, acupuncture, exercise and improved diet and nutrition. Improving posture and joint mechanics to stimulate the brain and spinal nerves is the focus of chiropractic treatment. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which includes needle acupuncture restores the internal balance between our mind and body. Establishing good nutrition by developing healthy eating habits and correct exercise routines invigorates and sustains the work of chiropractic and TCM. Together these four modalities help restore the body's energy (Qi or Chi, pronounced 'chee') and maximize our physical and mental health as well as spiritual well-being.

The synergistic effects of combining chiropractic care, acupuncture, exercise, and improved nutrition are often immediate, long lasting and life enhancing. Before long, we begin to have a more positive outlook on life. We become happier, healthier human beings. Ultimately, one's life can transform and become more fulfilling and rewarding.

Whatever your current limitations are, let Community Chiropractor and Acupuncture, located in Park Slope, Brooklyn help you begin your journey towards optimal health. By working with the body's restorative energies, removing biomechanical interference, nourishing the cells and systems of the body, and enjoying daily exercise, we can begin to establish the life you envision.
